Club History

Desperate for some rugby in the Balkans, a motley band of exiles founded the Athens Spartans RFC in 1982. As the only team in Greece, the Spartans played teams from visiting navy vessels. They also toured, ransacking entire cities and cut broad swathes across the countryside on campaigns over the years in England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland Belgium, Holland, Germany, Czech Republick, Turkey, Mallorca, Malta, Cyprus and Kenya.

Yet, despite a tradition of devastation abroad, the Spartans have always worked hard to cultivate rugby in their adopted land. Indeed, the Club developed out of the athletic's program at Campion School in Halandri. For years, the Spartans have focused on the Club's youth program, introducing rugby to the schools in Athens and encouraging young players. Last year, fellow Spartans founded two new rugby clubs in Greece: The Corinth Minotaurs and the Attica Springboks. And this year, the Spartans started an Under 21's team.
